How exactly are a culture’s beliefs about life after death linked to their burial practices? It seems clear that the rising trend towards cremation over against traditional burial is somehow related to a cultural shift in American religious beliefs about death and what comes after. But in what way? In this presentation, Tim Mackie, a graduate student in Biblical and Jewish studies at UW-Madison, will explore what exactly the Jewish and Christian traditions teach about life, death, and resurrection, and how they both illuminate and challenge our common cultural perceptions about these matters. |
